Qross Qultural Queer Film Festival

The focus of Q-fest is to promote ongoing dialogue on sexuality within the context of many different cultural views. Each film will be followed by a facilitated discussion by a staff or faculty member and/or student. The discussion will focus on the issues raised or excluded by each of the films and will encourage dialogue among audience members. The Q-Fest gives all students a chance to challenge the stereotypes placed on sexuality, culture and race.

The Q-Fest is an event open to everyone and admission is free.

Johnny Greyeyes

A woman who has committed a capital crime finds love and strength behind bars in this hard-edged independent drama from Canada. Johnny Greyeyes is a woman from a Native North American family who has gained firsthand knowledge of the hard side of life. After her abusive father was shot and killed, Johnny was found guilty of the crime. Behind bars, Johnny meets Lana, a tough but good-hearted inmate, and their relationship soon graduates from friendship to love.

On the Downlow is the explosive story of the relationship between Isaac and Angel, two young Latinos involved in a Southside Chicago gang. The decisions these men make and the paths they each take create a trap for them in a community where rules can't be broken and secrets won't be tolerated. With characters that defy stereotyping and a surprising tenderness, On the Downlow is an unconventional look at life in the hood.

A Jihad for Love

Muslim gay filmmaker Parvez Sharma travels the many worlds of Islam, discovering the stories of its most unlikely storytellers: lesbian and gay Muslims. Filmed over five and a half years, in 12 countries and 9 languages, A Jihad for Love comes from the heart of Islam. Looking beyond a hostile and war-torn present, this film seeks to reclaim the Islamic concept of a greater Jihad, which can mean “an inner struggle” or “to survive in the path of God.” In doing so, the film and its remarkable subjects move beyond the narrow concept of “Jihad” as holy war.

Madam Sata

A story inspired by the life of one of the most remarkable figures in Brazilian popular culture, João Francisco dos Santos (1900-1976). Bandit, transvestite, street fighter, brothel cook, convict and father to seven adopted children, dos Santos--better known as Madame Satã--was also a notorious gay performer who pushed social boundaries in a volatile time.

Chutney Popcorn

This comedy is about a New York-based, East Indian-American family consisting of a mother and her two daughters - Sarita and Reena. The traditional mother has accepted the American way of life, and did not raise any objections when Sarita decided to marry Mitch, a Caucasian male. But her acceptance stopped right there, after she found out that Reena is a lesbian, and has a Caucasian girlfriend!

Beautiful Boxer

This visually beautiful film is based on the real life story of Parinya Charoenphol, a male to female transgender Muaythai boxer. Beautiful Boxer chronicles Parinya’s life from a young boy, who likes to wear lipstick and flowers, to her sensational career as a kickboxer, whose specialty is the ancient Muaythai boxing moves.
