In Memory of Equine Officer Rainmaker![]() Officer Schroeder and partner Rainmaker Rainmaker was a 30-year-old Appaloosa horse that had worked for HSU Mounted Police Patrol for the past 6 years. He was one of the first equine officers to work for UPD, beginning his career in October 1997. Rainmaker passed away on January 3, 2004 due to medical complications. Equine Officer Rainmaker was the most photographed UPD officer, especially during HSU Commencement exercises. He was selected as an equine officer because of his calm demeanor and ability to respond to training. Rainmaker, along with his partner, Sergeant Roger Schroeder (pictured with Rainmaker) had over 250 hours of training with several agencies, such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the San Francisco Mounted Police Unit, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department Mounted Enforcement Unit, and the Humboldt County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. Rainmaker provided service in community events and parades from Trinidad to Arcata. The University Police Department currently has two horses in training to be future Equine Officers. These horses, which are not owned or maintained by the University, will be partnered with Sergeant Mary Dezern and Sergeant Roger Schroeder. The campus will be invited to attend an event commemorating Officer Rainmaker's contribution to his community and profession. |
