Increased Bike Thefts From Campus.

There has been an increase in bike thefts on campus. This month alone (Aug.), six bikes have been stolen from different locations around campus. Although it is not possible to make your bicycle 100% theft-proof, here are some simple steps that may help increase the security of your bicycle and it's parts:

  • Use a case-hardened "U" lock, cable locks are easily cut.
  • If you use a regular padlock, purchase one with a 7/16" shank, the largest size that will fit the campus bike rack.
  • Lock your bike in a well-lit area.
  • Lock your bike in an area that can be seen by passing pedestrians and motorists.
  • Don't leave your bike locked in a rack overnight.
  • Remember to also lock parts attached with quick-release mechanisms.
  • Replace quick-release mechanisms with regular nut and bolt ones.
  • Use residence hall bike rooms when available

If you notice anyone "casing" or lingering in the area of bike racks, please phone UPD as soon as possible with a physical description of the subject.
