RAD Objective

"To develop and enhance the options of self defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked."
- Larry Nadeau

The Humboldt State University Police Department in partnership with the Office of the Vice President, Student Affairs sponsors Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes for University students, staff and faculty as well as the general public.

RAD is a self-defense program designed specifically for women to protect themselves against assaults or abductions. The RAD approach to personal safety begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

RAD courses place emphasis in areas that instill dependency on self, and making your own decisions. A woman must be able to decide when and when not to use force in self-defense. She must also make her own decision based on what she feels is right for her at that point in time.

Safety and survival in today's world requires a definite course of action. We provide effective options by teaching women to take an active role in their own self-defense.

RAD offers the opportunity to exert physical strength. Many women do not have a self-realization of their own physical power. Along with offering women the chance to strike something with 100% impact force, it also gives women a chance to see themselves as being effective in a confrontational situation.

The RAD course is taught by certified RAD instructors, and provides a workbook/reference manual. The RAD system of physical defense is currently being taught at many colleges and universities. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of RAD's tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology.
