Complex Passwords

UIS will be implementing new password complexity requirements for Banner Users on October 1st. This requirement only affects Banner users and will not change the Banner Web PIN requirements. Banner Web PIN complexity requirements will be added in November before the Spring 06 registration session begins.

We will begin expiring current Banner passwords on October 3rd using the following schedule.

First Letter of Account Expire date
A-E Oct. 3rd
F-L Oct. 10th
M-P Oct. 17th
Q-Z Oct. 24th

Banner users will have a seven day grace period to change their password, during which they will get an warning each time they log in. On the seventh day from the listed dates users will be forced to change their password before being allowed to continue.

The new requirements will be:

  1. Must be at least 8 characters long
  2. Must include at least one alpha character (a-z, upper or lower case)
  3. Must include at least one number
  4. Must include at least one special character from the following set: !#%*+,-. /:=?@\^

These requirements are currently turned on in both test databases, Beta and Kappa. They have also been turned on in production for the UIS staff for over 6 months.

Tech staff should be aware that some special characters can cause problems when submitting jobs on laurel. Jobs may need to be modified to protect special characters from being interpreted by the command shell.
