Alternative Spring BreakProgram Weekly MeetingPending Program Directors
Annie Hehner Program MissionAlternative Spring Break is a one-unit class designed to connect service done in a community to our higher education. Enrolled students take part in a week long service project during Humboldt State’s Spring Break. We help those in a community outside of Humboldt County and look at the various issues that exist there. Service, Goals & ProjectsStudents this year worked with organic farmers and community partners to participate in a variety of service projects. Students traveled in mid March to the Capay Valley region of Yolo County, California (northwest of Davis), and explored issues around sustainability, including sustainable agricultural processes and sustainable community cohesion. The area is known for its agricultural production and is also home to the Wintun tribe of the Rumsey Indian Rancheria. The students were able to assist in activities at a few organic farms and actually camped at one of the farm locations. They contributed to restoration work by planting hedge rows, helped create a vegetable garden for a public school, and learned about the area’s agricultural dynamics. ![]() A photo of volunteers creating a garden for a public school ![]() A photo of volunteers Sharon and Mackenzie learn how to milk a cow ![]() A photo of ASB volunteers take a break from planting 80 trees for a hedge row |
